ZFS is a file system, and therefore it can handle files just like any other operating system, such as Windows or Linux. This means that ZFS can easily play along with any hardware you may want to assign it to use.

One of the best features about ZFS is its ability to let us use SSDs (Solid State Drives), which are ultrafast storage devices compared to regular disks. ZFS was made specifically for these devices, leveraging their speed by adding a layer of caching called ARC (Adaptive Replacement Cache) in front of slower HDDs/SSDs. This process allowing them to act as if they were using RAM directly. Thus gaining unparalleled performance out of your storage pool.

The key here is that, unlike other file systems such as EXT4 and XFS, ZFS is not bound by the limits of the hardware it runs on. Another benefit we get from using SSDs is their low power consumption with minimal heat generation, thus allowing us to put these devices inside our servers without worrying about overheating or wasting energy. With this configuration, we can save a lot of money on electricity bills and potential failures due to overheating.

Expanded L2ARC caching layer

On top of all those goodies, ZFS provides another level of caching called L2ARC (Secondary Adaptive Replacement Cache). Traditional L1/L2 caches work by keeping a copy of the most recently accessed data in fast storage devices such as RAM or SSDs. This process allowing the operating system to quickly serve that data without going back to the slower disks.

The great thing about L2ARC is that it can be used to cache files and entire directories. This means that we can greatly speed up our ZFS-based systems by adding a few extra SSDs (or even USB thumb drives) to our setup.
In addition, L2ARC caching is entirely transparent to the user. It does not require any unique configuration, making it an effortless way to get outstanding performance out of your system with little effort.

Data deduplication

Last but not least, ZFS also provides a data deduplication feature that can significantly reduce the amount of storage space needed for our files. Deduplication works by identifying duplicate copies of data and storing only a single copy of it, thus saving disk space.

This is a compelling feature and can be used to have a significant effect on systems with limited storage capacity. For example, if we have a single 2TB hard drive system and run a deduplication scheme that removes 10% of the data. We will effectively get an extra 200GB of usable storage!

As you can see, there are several compelling reasons to use Z as our file system of choice. It is highly flexible and can be adapted to pretty much any hardware. We may want to use while providing outstanding performance and data protection.
