Comfortable and Compatible
Microsoft’s controller is easy to operate. It helps from built-in Windows support—plug it in, and it works with just about any game that supports a controller. But it requires AA batteries or an add-on rechargeable battery pack if you need to play wirelessly.
Microsoft’s XBOX Wireless Controller
The Series X|S consoles are almost equal to the older Xbox One controller. It adds a Share button for clips and screenshots, uses a USB-C port, and has a redesigned eight-way directional pad. Still, otherwise, the two are difficult to tell apart. It is a proven design that runs well. Most PC games allow controls and button layouts that think you are using an Xbox controller (or one with an Xbox-style button layout). Audio quality from the headset jack is suitable when you don’t want to connect your headphones directly to your computer. The biggest downside is that you need a pair of AA batteries or a rechargeable battery pack if you’re going to play wirelessly.

Best for Smaller Hands – Best PC Gaming Controllers
Sony’s PlayStation 4 controller is a more suitable choice if you have smaller hands. It has a built-in rechargeable battery and nicer-feeling analogue sticks. But it might demand additional setup for some games, and many games default to Xbox-style button labels.
Sony DualShock 4 Wireless Controller
The Sony DualShock 4 Wireless Controller is slightly smaller than the Xbox controller, making it a more suitable choice for smaller hands. It also has more relaxed control sticks than the Xbox controller and a left-positioned directional pad that’s more convenient for playing 2D games. It has some cool extra features that the Xbox controller needs, such as an internal rechargeable battery and a touchpad that simulates a mouse cursor. But performing it work with non-Steam Windows or macOS games requires some additional work. And headsets plugged into its audio jack don’t run correctly with PCs except you buy Sony’s USB wireless adapter. Many games also consider an Xbox button layout. As a decision, it can be unclear when the in-game button labels don’t match your controller’s buttons.
Why we like
That’s why we like the SONY DualShock 4 best for PC gaming than the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller, which has the same deficiencies but is more comprehensive and costly.

Retro Buffalo Classic USB Gamepad for PC
Suppose you like to play retro (or retro-throwback) games that don’t require all the additional buttons, sticks, and modern controllers’ triggers. A more modest gamepad can give you a better and more genuine experience. The Buffalo Classic USB Gamepad is not as faithful a replica as the controllers that come with the Super NES Classic Edition. Still, it is the best of all the SNES-clone controllers out there. Its buttons are relaxed, responsive, and quicker, and it has a Turbo feature to help with repetitive button mashing. Why you should trust us
We have been testing, reviewing, and writing about PCs and other gadgets for Cnet, blogging mania, and food times since 2015. Now we developed our own site TechShok. We have been building, upgrading, and fixing PCs for more than two decades. Ago We was old enough to hold one. We have also played with game controllers. We have extensive experience with every significant controller shipped with a Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft console.
Who this is for – Best PC Gaming Controllers
Suppose you previously have a PlayStation or an Xbox console (or a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller). You are happy with the controller that came with it. In that case, you probably don’t need to buy a different one. And you can play many PC games with a keyboard and mouse. We recommend buying one of our picks here only if you don’t own a game console already if you need a second-player controller. And you don’t want to deal with moving one controller back and forth.
We choose recommended picks that can connect directly to a PC or laptop with a USB cable. These wireless gaming controllers can pair via Bluetooth, just like wireless headphones or wireless keyboards. All Apple Mac Os devices and almost all Windows laptops and advanced gaming desktop computers include built-in Bluetooth, but an old gaming desktop might not. Suppose you need to add Bluetooth to your desktop. In that case, we recommend an internal PCI Express card with suitable antennas. It would be best to have an empty PCI slot and a free USB header on your desktop computer or laptop, rather than one of the many cheap USB dongles. In our testing, small USB dongles caused the connection to become laggy and inconsistent after just a few minutes of gaming.
How we recommended
Best PC Gaming Controllers
Controller decision is highly personal. It may be uncomfortable with your hand size, gaming style, and the operating system you use. But regardless of which specific controllers you want, most people should look for the following features:
Compatibility and comfortability
Although of your hand size, you should be able to hold the controller for a couple of hours without cramping, and it shouldn’t slip around if your hands get sweaty. The controller should also feel substantial but not so heavy that it causes arm and wrist fatigue.
With this best pc gaming controller, Every button, trigger, and joystick should do what you want when you need. And the controls should have sufficient space in them for you to find them by touch without unexpectedly touching multiple buttons.
Compatibility with Windows, macOs and other software
A controller should need minimal setup, unusually in Windows, where the vast majority of PC gaming happens. But compatibility with macOS and iOS (and the Apple Arcade service) is a plus, as is support for game stores like Steam that offer their controller support.
A best price
An excellent wireless controller usually costs somewhere between $60 and $80, and a decent wired controller should cost around half that.
For wireless controllers, the additional performance to work when wired
PC gaming Controllers that use 2.4 GHz wireless or Bluetooth offer convenience and prevent cable clutter. They can still introduce latency, and their batteries eventually run out. Suitable wireless controllers should also connect via USB if you’re playing a game where split-second response time is essential. If you are charging the battery or your system doesn’t have Bluetooth.
Other features—such as touchpads, internal rechargeable batteries, or extra customizable buttons and triggers—are nice to have. Still, a suitable controller doesn’t need them.

And Valve for previous updates to this guide, plus a few other controllers from lesser-known companies popular on Amazon. Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless controller is comfortable to hold. It benefits from built-in Windows support—plug it in, and it works with just about any game that supports a controller. But it requires AA batteries or an add-on rechargeable battery pack if you want to play wirelessly.
Overview – Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless PC Gaming Controller
Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless PC Gaming Controller for the Xbox Series X and S consoles is a redesigned version of the Xbox One pc gaming controller, which itself was a revised version of the old Xbox 360 gamepad. It is a well-known design that feels suitable and works excellent. It is friendly built-in support in Windows: Not only does it run automatically with just about any controller-compatible game you can play. Besides, it also brings up a handy gaming menu in Windows that you can use for streaming, taking screenshots, and more. But there are some caveats. It’s relatively large. It requires either AA batteries or a rechargeable battery pack (sold separately, of course). It is a directional pad located toward the controller’s center. We discovered it less suitable for long 2D gaming sessions than the Sony DualShock 4’s left-aligned D-pad.
Buttons – Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless PC Gaming Controller
The pc gaming controller’s ABXY buttons are very responsive and fast. The sticks glide smoothly. The gently textured plastic on the front and back feels good to hold and grip, and the pc gaming controller has a comforting heft that won’t fatigue your wrists or hands and fingers. Microsoft has also improved the controller’s shoulder and trigger buttons compared with those on the old Xbox One controller. They give them a more substantial feel and trade their shiny finish for two matte textures. That textures make it easier for you to tell the difference between the shoulder buttons and the triggers. I did find the rubber rim of each analog stick to be rougher and less pleasant to touch than the uniformly textured sticks on Sony’s DualShock 4 or DualSense.
8Way D-Pad – Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless PC Gaming Controller
Although the eight-way D-pad is nice and clicky, it is listed below. To the right of the central analog stick, so it’s a bit less comfortable to use than the pad on Sony’s controllers if you’re playing 2D games for long stretches.

Built-in Support – Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless PC Gaming Controller
The Xbox pc gaming controller enjoys built-in support in Windows, and recent versions of both macOS and iOS have added support. Many games (Steam games included) also use the Xbox’s button labels in their interfaces. Regardless of which controller you’re using, making tutorials more comfortable to follow and control schemes easier to learn.
Wireless connectivity – Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless PC Gaming Controller
The Xbox pc gaming controller can connect to your computer over wireless or with a USB-C cable. At the time of connecting the pc gaming controller in Bluetooth connectivity mode. Press the Xbox power button to turn on the controller and then hold the sync button for five seconds on the pc gaming controller’s top. However, Bluetooth is flaky under the best of circumstances, and your experience may vary depending on the computer you’re using. Note that the controller’s headset jack doesn’t work when using the controller wirelessly. Microsoft recommends connecting only one controller via Bluetooth at a time (multiple controllers might work, but they could have interference issues). Connecting with a USB-C cable or using Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows 10 fixes those problems.
Price – Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless PC Gaming Controller
The Xbox controller usually costs $60 for a white or black version and $65 for other colors like blue or red. Microsoft’s Xbox Design Lab, which allowed for fully customizable controllers with all kinds of colors and finishes, is currently unavailable for this controller. Still, Microsoft says it “will be back in 2021.”
Battery & Charging – Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless PC Gaming Controller
Microsoft’s controller gives more time on a charge than either the DualShock 4 or the DualSense. Still, it is featured with AA batteries. Microsoft’s rechargeable battery kit costs you $25, or you can find third-party batteries like this one from Insignia for $15. You could also choose rechargeable AA batteries, though you can not charge those batteries on the controller USB-C type port. But any way you choose, the battery adds significantly to the controller’s cost. It is effortless to change the Xbox pc gaming controller’s rechargeable battery when it starts to down its performance. Still, it is not difficult to change the built-in batteries in pc gaming controllers. The SONY DualShock 4 or the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller using a guide and parts from companies iFixit.

Good for Smaller Hands – Sony DualShock 4 Wireless Controller
Sony’s PlayStation 4 pc gaming controller is a more suitable choice if you have smaller hands. It has a rechargeable battery and nicer-feeling analog sticks. But it might need additional setup for some games, and many games default to Xbox-style button labels.
Overview – Sony DualShock 4 Wireless PC Gaming Controller
The Sony DualShock 4 Wireless PC Gaming Controller is older than the modern Xbox controller. It’s compatibility with Windows isn’t as good. Sony DualShock 4 Wireless PC gaming controller has a built-in rechargeable battery plus analog sticks that don’t feel as rough against the thumbs. DualShock 4 Wireless PC gaming controller is more suitable to hold if you have smaller hands. Wireless connectivity of Sony DualShock 4 Wireless PC gaming controller works over both Bluetooth and Micro-USB. While it does not have the same built-in Windows support as the Xbox controller. The Sony DualShock 4 Wireless PC gaming controller works excellent with Steam, the most prominent digital storefront for PC games. Its headset jack also does not work accurately with Windows computers or iMac.
You can listen to sound out of it, but the input does not work. So for this, you need to connect your headset directly to your computer instead.
Buttons – Sony DualShock 4 Wireless PC Gaming Controller
The DualShock 4 pc gaming controller’s buttons, triggers, and joysticks are easy to reach for most people, although of hand size. They all feel accurate, understanding, and satisfying. The directional pad’s position—on the left of the controller, rather than toward the bottom center—makes the DualShock 4 more suitable to use than Xbox-style controllers in retro-style 2D games Hollow Knight, Cuphead, or Super Meat Boy. It is still a best pc gaming controller for 3D shooters and action games. Thanks to Sony for its comfortable analog tower sticks and easy-to-reach triggers/buttons. The rubber design on the analog sticks is more convenient than the surface of the Xbox controller’s posts, too.
Sticks – Sony DualShock 4 Wireless PC Gaming Controller
The Sony DualShock 4’s analogue sticks have a uniform rubber coating that makes them more suitable than other controllers. When you are using the Sony DualShock 4 pc gaming controller with Steam, you can configure the trackpad to work as a mouse and customize the controller’s light bar’s color and brightness. Some games outside Steam (and some other operating systems, such as macOS and iOS) natively support Sony’s controllers. Newer games seldom use Sony’s button labels in their interfaces so that you won’t get mixed up. But to get the Xbox controller’s level of built-in compatibility with Windows and some other games. You need to install software like x360ce, making any controller show up as an Xbox gamepad within Windows.
Price – Sony DualShock 4 Wireless PC Gaming Controller
The DualShock 4 typically costs $60, the same amount as the Xbox controller. However, it’s regularly on sale for less than that. It is even cheaper once you factor in the Xbox controller’s rechargeable battery. Assume your DualShock 4’s battery isn’t holding a charge like it used to. In that case, you can restore it with a screwdriver and some easy-to-follow instructions like iFixit’s.
Wireless Connectivity – Sony DualShock 4 Wireless PC Gaming Controller
You can use the Sony DualShock 4 pc gaming controller over Bluetooth connectivity or with a Micro-USB type cable. To connect it to any computer via Bluetooth, press and hold the PlayStation and Share buttons for five seconds until the light bar blinks. The Micro-USB connection grants you the DualShock 4 on computers without Bluetooth. It recharges the controller’s battery while you play. The DualShock 4 doesn’t come with a Micro-USB cable, but if you don’t have one lying around, you can get a great one for just a few dollars.

Enhanced PowerA wired gaming controller takes advantage of the generous Xbox controller support built into Windows computer and other operating systems like macOS or Android and game stores. Its headset jack sounds nice, not always a given for budget controllers, and it has a handy nearby volume and mute button.
It does feel a little more affordable than Microsoft’s Xbox PC gaming controller. Particularly in its hollow-feeling shoulder and trigger buttons, but overall it is a compact deal.
Design – PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox
The PowerA pc gaming controller’s design is comparable to that of the newly updated official Xbox controller’s design. So if you feel that gamepad to be awkwardly large, you will have the same criticism about this one newly official Xbox controller. But all the buttons and triggers are very responsive and very soft to work. They feel as good as or better than those of all the other budget controllers we have tested. The analogue sticks of the controller and the D-pad control smoothly and accurately. However, the analogue sticks have a roughly textured rim that might irritate your thumbs during long play sessions.
Comparison – PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox
In Comparision with the official Microsoft controller, the PowerA controller feels lighter. The designed texture on the backside is less grippy. We could also take or leave the spare buttons on the handles, which you can use to duplicate other controls’ functions or ignore them entirely. The controller connects via a Micro-USB cable, which you can replace if it frays or gets damaged or if you prefer a wire that’s shorter or longer. And it’s officially licensed with Microsoft’s stamp of approval, so it works with Xbox consoles in addition to PCs. PowerA offers the controller in various colours. As of this writing, the black and white versions are the most readily available.

Overview –Buffalo iBuffalo Classic USB Gamepad for PC
Our controller will work just fine for retro games and emulators. Still, if you are chasing nostalgia, you might want a more straightforward gaming controller to match it. Of all the many Super Nintendo replica gamepads we looked at, the Buffalo Classic USB Gamepad stands out as the most suitable and comforting. It is way more costly at around $35 per controller than it used to be, but it is also the closest you can get to the real thing.
Buttons –Buffalo iBuffalo Classic USB Gamepad for PC
The Buffalo pc gamepad has four face buttons, two shoulder buttons. Start and Select buttons, and a directional pad plus Turbo buttons that simulate rapid mashing on one or more of the other buttons. All are responsive and easy to reach. Although you might need the sculpted handles of advanced controllers, the Buffalo gamepad’s rounded corners and simple design make it comfortable for extended play sessions. The shoulder buttons also have just the right amount of giving.
In contrast, the buttons on the In next retro controllers we tested felt stiff and mushy. Compared with a real Super Nintendo controller (or the perfect replicas that ship with the Super NES Classic Edition console). Buffalo’s pad is slightly light in hand, but the buttons feel nearly identical.
Simple –Buffalo iBuffalo Classic USB Gamepad for PC
You will find no joysticks, other sensors and vibration motors in the Buffalo gamepad. So it is a poor fit for modern games; native Windows and Steam integration is nonexistent.
